Job Summary We are looking for an Events Marketing Manager with experience with live performing arts. Caltech's Office of Strategic Communications (OSC) works to define, promote, and protect Caltech's image, reputation, and brand. We curate, plan, and lead events as well as create a wide range of content across multiple formats and platforms to tell the story of Caltech's impact on science and on the world to key internal and external audiences while connecting the Institute to the broader community. Within OSC, the purpose of the Public Programming group is to develop and present programs (both science lectures and performing arts programs) that serve Caltech's students, faculty, staff, and JPL colleagues; that connect Caltech to the broader community; that create appropriate connections with school districts and other arts and community oriented organizations in the greater Pasadena and Los Angeles area.
Reporting to the Director of Public Programming, the Event Marketing Manager (EMM) is responsible for overseeing and efficiently planning, strategizing, and supporting staff to market all arts performances, lectures, and events led and/or supported by the Public Programming group within OSC. The EMM supervises Public Programming's Social Media Coordinator. The Event Marketing Manager will work closely with the director of the program to ensure that all promotion efforts are handled in a timely, professional and fiscally prudent manner. The successful candidate will work closely with other OSC communications staff to ensure that a coordinated presentation of the Program is offered to the public as driven by OSC policies.
Job Duties - Helps create and implement a strategic marketing plan to engage the campus and external communities each season with a particular emphasis on building out strategic efforts in e-marketing and turning around and increasing paid attendance for all ticketed events, for the family science and performing arts programming, for the two free-to-the-public signature lecture series Caltech campus and JPL produces and any other presentations coordinated by the Public Programming office. S/he works closely with other colleagues in OSC and appropriate other divisions to ensure that the representation of the Program supports Caltech's mission to expand knowledge and understanding through research and education - Oversees all Program efforts to promote the lectures and performing arts by: - Using traditional institutional print promotion efforts - Using e-promotion through various digital and social marketing channels that reach a variety of demographics important to Caltech - Purchasing print and e-advertising - Managing public relations efforts to both broadcast and narrowcast information about specific events - Coordinating with other OSC staff to ensure that the program's website is up-to-date - Assesses the resources in place and identifies where Public Programming will be better served by engaging outside consultants and specialists to assist with the overall marketing of the Program's activities by: - Evaluating the needs of a comprehensive marketing campaign for a campus-based performing arts and lecture series working with restricted funding and - Selecting appropriate vendors to help with tasks such as developing and executing design concepts, copywriting, publicity promotion, print material distribution and other tasks best handled by specialists - Maintains a comprehensive and timely understanding of the program, its business operations (including tickets sales, revenue, sponsorships), as well as marketing goals, objectives, and target audiences - Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive surveying process that will help staff determine future programming and marketing decisions - Establishes clear, trackable benchmarks for measuring program progress, which includes not only setting but the analyzing and reporting on marketing KPIs - Oversees and manages relationships with the Program's co-sponsors and partners and ensures that appropriate recognition is given to all Program co-sponsors and underwriters - Manages and develops the social media coordinator in Public Programming - Manages the marketing budget expenditures for the Program - Creates partnerships with campus and community groups for cross-promotions and program sponsorships - Engages with professional peers in the arts and public events field to better understand the landscape and how to implement best practices overall at Caltech - May be asked to represent the Institute and its programs to the community, both on and off campus
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience - 4 years of progressively responsible experience marketing and promoting a successful performing arts program - A demonstrated history of developing and managing a successful campaign to dramatically increase ticket sales and attendance at public performing arts and/or lecture series - Demonstrated experience in all aspects of marketing and promoting a multi-disciplinary arts performance programs with experience in using contemporary technologies and approaches to marketing such programs, including sophisticated e-marketing and social media management experience - Demonstrated history of managing a data collecting and analysis program essential to management of a performing arts presentation program - Strong financial understanding, in order to manage the marketing budget and staff - Ability to work in a hands-on environment - Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple long and short-term projects simultaneously - Ability to effectively communicate across the organization, including with campus and community leaders as necessary, establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of officials and coworkers - Demonstrate the ability to practice and adhere to organizational values
Preferred Qualifications - Master's degree in a job-related field - Experience working in an academic setting
