APEX, the Academic Partnership and Engagement Experiment, is a new United States Air Force (USAF) program developed in partnership with Wright State Research Institute to improve engagement and collaboration between the USAF, academia, and its industry partners. The APEX Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for leading the branding, and messaging of the new APEX program across the government, academia, and industry. Responsibilities include but are not limited to day-to-day operation of the APEX marketing and communications programs to enable and increase entrepreneurship and collaboration across the USAF and the rest of the DOD.
The specific focus of the APEX Communications and Marketing Manager position is to plans and direct all aspects of APEX's public relations policies, objectives, and initiatives. This position must ensure that all external and internal communications result in positive public relations and outside organizations and APEX maintain public goodwill inside and outside the organization. In this position the APEX Communications and Marketing Manager must promote transparency at all times, always act ethically, promote and ensure compliance, collaborate across APEX and USAF, the APEX Director of Communications and Marketing must cultivate our people as our greatest asset, and create an environment that supports innovation and inclusive behaviors.
This position reports directly to the APEX Executive Director.
Bachelor's degree with emphasis in journalism, marketing or related field.
Minimum 10 years' experience in marketing communications, communications and/or public relations.
Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the defense and education/research sectors. In particular demonstrated knowledge of research and development business and procurement transactions including, but not limited to: National Academia of Sciences, NSF, NIH, DARPA, AFRL, ONR, AFOSR, LCMC, NASIC, ARL, IARPA, SOCOM, industry and many other government and industry research and development organizations.
Proven project management skills and superior verbal, written, and presentation skills. Ability to think creatively and conceptually as well as analytically.
Experience developing strong relationships with media and successfully pitching stories with supporting portfolio
Demonstrated knowledge of research and development business and procurement transactions including, but not limited to: National Academia of Sciences, NSF, NIH, DARPA, AFRL, ONR, AFOSR, LCMC, NASIC, ARL, IARPA, SOCOM, industry and many other government and industry research and development organizations.
Active relationships with external network of industry and government bodies to gather leading practice insights and discuss new trends and directions and unique marketing and communication opportunities. In particular, experience working with the research and development Programs.
Demonstrated understanding of long-term market forecasts, trends and competitive positions to maximize advantages while executing strategy.
Experience providing leadership in supporting and marketing and communications of collaborative multi-discipline programs.
DCMP (the DMA Certified Marketing Professional program) or equivalent
Essential Functions and percent of time::
30% Communication direction: - Oversee and/or execute marketing communications to support business goals for APEX. -Create and implementing marketing communications strategic plans for multiple business lines. -Plans, direct, media/distribution, websites, press releases (PR), short videos, social Media: -LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, presentations at events, and supports developing of networks and stakeholders.
30% Brand management: -Manage the brands for APEX and its business lines across multiple verticals. -Effectively utilize a comprehensive array of communications channels such as media relations, web, digital and social media, advertising, community relations, special events, sponsorships, and community collaborations. -Represent APEX and/or its brands at academic, community, and industry events. -Work with USAF on joint public relations efforts. -Act as spokesperson for APEX and/or its brands when necessary.
30% Strategy and Policy development: -Develop internal APEX marketing and communication strategic plan aligned with Executive Director and Chief Scientist strategies and goals. -Develop internal communication and marketing policy and procedures.
10% Supervision and oversight: -Provide oversight and supervision of communication and marketing efforts, budgets, and external and internal teams.
This position is anticipated to require moderate travel. Special contract terms and conditions of employment apply. Length of contract is one year, renewable, contingent upon funding.
