Marketing & Public Relations Specialist (Marketing Specialist) - (1900005J) The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Office of the President is currently working as a Public Relations & Marketing Specialist (Marketing Specialist) . Under the direction of the Senior Director for Leadership Communications, the Public Relations & Marketing Specialist for the Office of the President is responsible for developing and managing activities and programs that elevate the profile of the UMB president among University alumni and other external audiences. This position will ensure that UMB/presidential news and accomplishments are communicated to alumni and to other external audiences through various mechanisms—including electronic newsletters, social media, and print publications—and will plan events and other opportunities that stimulate alumni engagement with the University and its schools. Primary Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions): - Designs and implements a systematic and integrated alumni relations program that encompasses communications, events, and prospect identification. Responsible for devising and using consistent, accurate, and appropriate information-sharing mechanisms for stewarding alumni prospects and donors and elevating the profile of the president.
- Provides vision and oversight of presidential messaging to alumni and external audiences. Serves as a liaison among Communications and Public Affairs, Philanthropy, and Special Events for these communications and maintains a comprehensive schedule of when and to whom communications are being sent.
- Using a network of Communications and Alumni Relations contacts within each school, gathers and shares information on news, initiatives, and events of potential interest to alumni and external audiences.
- Researches topics in higher education, health care, community engagement, etc., to which the president can speak authoritatively—in speeches, columns, commentaries, and other vehicles—and explores opportunities to engage these vehicles locally, regionally, and nationally.
- Works with the Office of Philanthropy to identify geographic centers of potential giving. Hosts events in these locations that raise the visibility of the president and the University, and assists Philanthropy staff with prospect identification.
- Establishes and manages information-tracking processes that allow the Office of the President to recognize, communicate with, and cultivate alumni to strengthen their relationship with the University and increase the likelihood of continued engagement.
- Works collaboratively with the Office of Philanthropy, Communications and Public Affairs, and Special Events to plan and execute alumni events—including compiling invitation lists, engaging featured program participants, and developing collateral material—e.g., invitations, marketing, scripts, A/V, and take-aways.
- Manages alumni engagement plans that build life-long connections to UMB and facilitate alumni engagement and support.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in public relations, marketing, English, advertising, communications, journalism, or a degree related to the position. Experience: Two (2) years of public relations or marketing experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Has exceptional writing skills and is able to present information in a way that is clear, creative, compelling, and concise.
- Effectively uses web, email, and design technology, such as InDesign Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Constant Contact, Word Press, and T4. Effectively uses social media platforms, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook.
- Is a strategic and analytical thinker and is able to market complex information to the public, quickly producing materials that are accurate, eloquent, and consistent.
- Understands best practices in marketing and communications. Is able to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a strategic vision of presidential communications.
- Is skilled in cultivating relationships.
- Is able to make independent decisions that are a matter of significance for the unit, is self-motivated, and takes a pro-active attitude towards tasks.
- Has strong project management skills, and is adept at working quickly, under the pressure of strict deadlines while managing multiple projects.
