General Summary/Purpose
The Center for Health Security, located in Baltimore, MD, is an independent, free-standing center of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. This position focuses on developing a strategic communications plan for the Center and leading and participating in the execution of that plan. The position reports to the Deputy Director and takes direction from the Center's Director.
The Director of Communications will set and guide the strategy for all communications, websites, and public relations messages to consistently articulate the Center's message. He/she will develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for brand management, online and direct marketing, media relations, and community engagement and will work closely with a senior peer group in the Center as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives. The Director of Communications will also work closely with the School's central communications and marketing teams to facilitate Center adherence to JHSPH and JHU Communications and Public Relations Policy.
Responsible for developing and implementing the communications strategy to promote the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security through all media outlets. Shapes and advances the Center's communications strategy, message, and brand across national and international communications.
Develops and implements a press strategy to increase the Center's public profile while supporting the Center's efforts to educate and influence high-level policymakers and their constituents. Duties include, but are not limited to, writing press releases, arranging press conferences, and communicating through social media platforms, and other appropriate e-communications outlets. Responsible for promoting the Center's work through all communication venues. Provides leadership to leverage the knowledge and experience of several professional staff, including the web editor.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Communications Strategy Provide vision, leadership, and counsel for the Center's communications and marketing efforts, including overseeing the development and implementation of an integrated communications plan to broaden awareness of the Center and its brand across key stakeholder audiences: media, public officials, key influencers, thought leaders, funders, and prospective funders. Press and Media Relations
Formulate and manage a comprehensive media relations strategy. Engage with key media outlets, both proactively and reactively, cultivating and managing press relationships to increase media coverage of the Center's projects, publications, and special events. Evaluate the effectiveness of communications efforts, tracking media citations, and adjust communications strategies and efforts to improve coverage.
Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities and work with staff to develop talking points, presentations, and other material as needed. Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote the organization, and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the Center. Website and Social Media
Develop a social media strategy to increase visibility, engagement, and traffic across all Center platforms. Oversee work of Website Editor, who is responsible for rebuilding and maintaining the Center's website. Develop and generate webcopy. Curate content and increase audience engagement on Center's social media channels.
Collaboration Promote the Center's work through, and grow, the Center's social media channels. Work with the Center's staff to develop compelling messages and content to be used across all Center communications channels. Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic messaging, including but not limited to newsletters, brochures, annual report, e-newsletters, and website. Coordinate and collaborate with the JHSPH External Affairs office.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related field. 5 years related experience. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
