The ISEN Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications (AD MarComm) is responsible for overseeing the daily execution of the Institute’s Integrated Marketing and Communications strategy, and the tactical development of marketing and communications content campaigns (including a semiannual Institute magazine publication and other related collateral). AD MarComm will also develop original, multimedia sustainability and energy content and pitch to internal/external media channel partners. The role includes coordination of ISEN MarComm personnel, internal/external freelance writers, and contractors (as appropriate).
AD MarComm is also the primary liaison for student engagement initiatives, including the Clinton Global Initiative University program, the Resnick Family Social Impact Fund, and other programs. AD MarComm will assist in developing the multidisciplinary student project pipeline, and internal program partners, including (but not limited to) the Buffett Institute for Global Studies, Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Kellogg Social Impact, and Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, and Design for America.
Some evening and/or weekend hours may be necessary, as dictated by programmatic responsibilities.
Marketing and Communications
Conceptualizes, writes, edits and produces original multimedia content (copy, video, etc.), and works in close collaboration with University marketing partners, including Global Marketing & Communications and other departments and centers, to distribute ISEN content and source supplemental material.
Directs daily implementation of Institute’s Marketing and Communications strategy, across digital and print marketing, communications, and social media platforms, ensuring content is current and aligned with MarComm campaigns, and branded positioning for Institute and Institute centers is accurate and engaging. Performed in collaboration with Senior Communications Manager, who will report to AD MarComm.
Responsible for conceiving forward-looking content campaigns that align with ISEN strategic foci, for the Institute and Institute centers.
Works directly with Managing Director and Associate Director to conceptualize strategic content for ISEN’s biannual magazine, writes features and minor pieces, and coordinates hiring/manages workflow of temporary personnel, including designers, freelance writers, and/or other contractors as necessary.
Writes and edits ISEN development collateral, in collaboration with ISEN leadership, Alumni Relations & Development, Foundation Relations, and others, as necessary.
Comprehensively manages student engagement initiatives, including program marketing, student recruitment/evaluation/selection, application/proposal development, etc.
Serves as client-facing ISEN liaison for internal/external program stakeholders, including co-sponsors or program facilitators (e.g. Clinton Foundation).
Leverages comprehensive knowledge of ISEN’s portfolio of student engagement initiatives to connect students/teams with mentors, various sources and stages of funding, and programmatic opportunities, and to maximize interdisciplinary collaboration.
Manages the ongoing refinement of programs to support continued development & improvement.
Supervises 1-2 staff. Coordinates hiring / manages workflow of temporary personnel, freelance writers, and/or other contractors, as necessary, to achieve strategic content or collateral needs (content expertise, coverage, placement, etc.)
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s in journalism or a communications-related field;
2+ years professional experience working in public relations, journalism, or communications (or equivalent experience);
2+ years’ experience managing program development in a fast paced environment
At least 1 year of demonstrated project management.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Excellent writing and editing skills; creative drive to generate compelling communications materials for varied audiences;
Familiarity with basic HTML / website content-management platform, Adobe product suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc)
Must be able to multi-task and work in a high-energy, fast paced environment;
Ability to prioritize with firm deadlines, and to work independently;
Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with a variety of constitutes, including faculty, board members, administrators, students and co-workers;
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Masters degree in journalism or a communications-related field;
3-4 years professional experience working in public relations, journalism, or communications (or equivalent experience);
Experience leading an operational team;
Prior experience working at a university, particularly a research university;
Project Management certification;
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Breadth of sustainability and energy knowledge, particularly as demonstrated with a writing portfolio spanning topics in science/technology, financial, and policy/regulatory environments.
Demonstrated experience / original work in graphic design and multimedia communications (photography, magazine, audio, video, etc.);
