HHMI’s Educational Media Group includes HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and HHMI BioInteractive. Our award-winning feature documentary arm, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, is comprised of accomplished producers, scientists, writers and artists who work with some of the world’s best science filmmakers to craft powerful stories of scientific discovery. We partner with leading mission-oriented organizations to bring our stories to broad audiences and increase our impact. To deepen learning in classroom settings, our HHMI BioInteractive team of educators and scientists produces and distributes free, high-quality educational resources aligned to recognized curriculum standards.
HHMI’s Educational Media group is searching for a Marketing and Communications Specialist to support our communications and outreach efforts. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Specialist will support both HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and HHMI BioInteractive, including developing messaging, media relations, writing and designing advertising and promotional materials, monitoring and managing social media channels, supporting outreach efforts, cultivating partnerships and supporting events. The successful candidate will have proven experience in communications, design, media relations, digital media and messaging. In addition, he or she will have experience building and maintaining relationships with partner organizations and supporting outreach campaigns.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, flexible, diplomatic and pragmatic. He or she should be a self-starter who is able to both work independently and function effectively as a part of a team. A background in science or experience working with scientific organizations or issues is desired.
Minimal overnight travel may be required.
Communications support is the primary function of this position. This includes writing, editing, branding, marketing, design, event support and campaign management. The Specialist will support communications efforts by:
Writing, editing and copyediting communications and marketing materials for HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and HHMI BioInteractive, including press releases and advisories, FAQs, web and social media copy, bios, media pitches and awards submissions. Mastery of AP Style is required.
Designing or editing promotional materials including print and digital ads, marketing collateral and digital assets for social media.
Drafting media lists, tracking media coverage - both traditional and social, and following trends in science media. An understanding of the news cycle and science media landscape is important.
Helping the team stay on top of multiple projects and keeping players informed and involved as appropriate. This person must be extremely organized and detail-oriented.
Coordinating with the HHMI Communications department to ensure we’re communicating our events/screenings/awards/news through internal channels.
Monitoring the work of external writers and copyeditors for large-scale projects.
Working closely with the digital projects specialist to promote Tangled Bank Studios on Tangled Bank social media platforms and liaise with BioInteractive and HHMI social media platforms for promotion as appropriate.
Outreach Support - Partnerships are essential to how HHMI reaches audiences with its films, projects and resources. This person will work closely with the Senior Manager of Outreach and Evaluation to support outreach efforts by:
Researching and evaluating potential partner organizations or events that could increase the reach and impact of projects and recommending strategies. Contacting and following up with organizational contacts as requested.
Tracking outreach efforts to ensure we’re obtaining the information we need and providing what we have promised in a timely manner.
Major Film Event Planning and Management – Throughout the year we sponsor and host events, panels, conferences and screenings. This person will support events by:
Building and following up with checklists, working with event vendors, building and managing guest lists and ensuring materials deadlines are met.
Liaising with event organizers to ensure they have promotional and event materials for customizable events.
Staffing and supporting events including film premieres, film festivals, conferences and meetings.
Marketing – HHMI BioInteractive and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios develop and execute promotional materials and campaigns for projects and products. This person will support marketing efforts by:
Assisting in the design of print and digital ads, posters and other creative including updating creative, adding logos, and customizing invitations.
Creating and supporting digital marketing efforts including e-mail signatures, newsletters, digital promo assets, editing and customizing digital promo files.
Researching and recommending sponsorship opportunities, experiences and products at events, meetings and festivals.
Monitoring for the correct implementation of brand/logo/messaging across Tangled Bank Studios and BioInteractive.
Working with external vendors to create quality marketing and promotional items and materials in a timely fashion.
Administration – Because this person will work closely with both the Tangled Bank and BioInteractive teams, they will play an essential role ensuring information is shared across the two groups. Administrative support will include:
Managing calendars of external events across BioInteractive and Tangled Bank Studios.
Scheduling and preparing agendas for weekly communications meeting.
Keeping track of assets and files (marketing, awards, press materials, promo stills, videos) and making sure they are stored in the right places.
Preparing and distributing weekly updates of media mentions/social media mentions/analytics to leadership and across teams.
A bachelor’s degree, demonstrated affinity for, or work experience in the sciences, preferably the life sciences.
3-5 years of experience in communications, including media relations, press materials creation, media monitoring, campaign work, partnership management.
Meticulous attention to detail.
Strong writing and editing skills with a solid command of AP Style.
